When it comes to sport the main one has to be football as the city has three separate football teams. These are Inverness Caledonian Thistle Football Club, the Clachacuddin Football Club and also the Inverness City Football Club as well. Inverness Caledonian Thistle was formed back in 1994 through a merger and currently play top flight football in the Scottish Premier League (SPL). The home games are played at the Caledonian Stadium which has a capacity of well over seven and a half thousand. The stadium opened in 1996 and is well known for its main stand which is out of proportion to the rest of the stadium. It has also had some of its stands redeveloped in recent times as well.

Other sports in the area include the Highland Rugby Football Club who play in the rugby Union and they were formed back in 1922. There local ground is the Canal Park and further information can be gained form their website.

Cricket is also worth mentioning with the Highland Cricket Club being the main team. The North of Scotland Cricket Association league is the main proviso for this sport.
